Sale of this item supports hospice care. What is a firkin? Consider it early tupperware. Designed to keep the varmints out, firkins can be used to hold everything from liquids to g arbage. More than likely originally based on liquid measurements, the term 'firkin' is generally used on what looks like a covered bucket. The use of firkins declined in the early part of the 20th century. This firkin measures about 9.75"h x 9". The handles are attached using wood dowels fixed with square head nails. The lid originally had an attached knob, which is lost.
