This circa 1970 original travel poster is a striking and playful representation of the Fribourg Alps, a picturesque mountain region in Switzerland. Designed as part of a promotional campaign to attract visitors to the area, this visually bold poster captures the spirit of Swiss winter sports and alpine culture. The central focus of the design is a colorful knitted winter hat, adorned with ski lift tickets—a clever and nostalgic nod to the region’s skiing and outdoor activities. The vibrant blue and purple tones give the poster a contemporary, almost pop-art aesthetic, making it stand out from traditional alpine travel posters of the era. The typography, with its bold “Alpes Fribourgeoises” and “Freiburger Alpen” lettering, reinforces the bilingual nature of the region, welcoming both French- and German-speaking visitors. During the mid-20th century, Swiss tourism offices commissioned modern and eye-catching designs to promote their destinations, moving away from purely scenic landscapes toward more conceptual and graphic-driven compositions. This poster reflects that shift, combining graphic art with Swiss cultural elements to create a unique and inviting image. The Fribourg Alps, home to resorts such as Charmey, Moléson, and Schwarzsee, offer year-round outdoor activities, from skiing and snowboarding in winter to hiking and mountain biking in summer. This poster would have been displayed in travel agencies, train stations, and tourism offices, encouraging both Swiss and international travelers to explore the region’s authentic alpine experience. Today, this vintage Swiss travel poster is a highly sought-after collector’s item, appealing to enthusiasts of mid-century graphic design, ski culture, and Swiss tourism history. It remains a charming and stylish representation of Switzerland’s deep-rooted love for the mountains and winter sports.
