This vintage 1962 travel poster, photographed by Abeil, showcases the stunning Lac de Serre-Ponçon, a vast artificial lake in the Hautes-Alpes region of France. The image captures a lively summer scene with sailboats gliding across the deep blue waters, people enjoying the lakeside, and the Grand Morgon mountain towering in the background, creating a dramatic contrast between water and peaks. The Lac de Serre-Ponçon, completed in 1961, was one of the largest artificial lakes in Western Europe, created by the damming of the Durance River. This engineering marvel not only helped with hydroelectric power and flood control but also transformed the region into a major tourist and recreational hub. The Baie Saint-Michel, visible in the distance, is famous for its tiny island chapel, which remains a symbol of resilience after the dam’s construction reshaped the landscape. With its bright natural colors, scenic composition, and a glimpse into 1960s outdoor recreation, this poster reflects the post-war boom in tourism and leisure activities. It remains a highly collectible piece, celebrating the harmony of nature and human ingenuity in the French Alps.
