This original 1969 concert poster by Lee Conklin was created for a series of performances presented by Bill Graham at the Fillmore West in San Francisco. Held from March 6 to 9, the concerts brought together Spirit, Ten Years After and Country Weather during one of the most influential periods in American psychedelic rock. Conklin constructs a strange domestic interior centred upon a monumental, headless figure seated in an armchair. Rendered with meticulous anatomical detail, the body contrasts sharply with the bright red walls and orange floral carpet. The bands’ names appear as framed pictures surrounding the figure, transforming the concert information into part of the surreal environment. Unlike the swirling abstraction commonly associated with psychedelic posters, this composition relies upon unexpected scale, visual humour and a deliberately unsettling atmosphere. The restrained flesh tones of the figure are offset by saturated red, orange and purple, while the carefully drawn textures give the image an almost dreamlike intensity. Lee Conklin was an important figure in San Francisco’s psychedelic poster movement. Known for his elaborate linework, distorted anatomy and imaginative integration of lettering and imagery, he produced numerous designs for Bill Graham’s concerts. His work helped establish the rock poster as an independent form of countercultural graphic art rather than a purely promotional object.
