Created in 1967 for the 23rd Salon de Mai in Paris, this original poster by Wifredo Lam was printed in lithograph. This example is an avant la lettre version, produced before the exhibition title, dates and additional information were added. Lam constructs the image from enigmatic figures combining human, animal and mask-like elements. Sweeping black lines dominate the composition, punctuated by accents of red and pale green that introduce rhythm and movement against the neutral background. Without the usual exhibition lettering, Lam’s composition can be appreciated in its purest graphic form. The open areas of paper and expressive marks give the poster a spontaneous quality while preserving the distinctive hybrid imagery associated with the artist. Born in Cuba in 1902, Wifredo Lam developed a visual language informed by Cubism, Surrealism and Afro-Caribbean culture.
