Created in Yerevan in 1968, this original illustrated document by Grigor Avaguian celebrates the exceptional architectural heritage of Armenia. Its French title translates as “Let Us Preserve Our Historic Monuments!”, clearly expressing the work’s educational purpose and its appeal for the protection of ancient cultural sites. The composition is centred on a large pictorial map of Soviet Armenia, immediately recognisable through the prominent outline of Lake Sevan. Hundreds of miniature illustrations locate churches, monasteries, temples, fortresses, bridges, mausoleums and archaeological ruins throughout the country. Extensive indexes beside and beneath the map allow the individual monuments to be identified by region. The central cartography is surrounded by detailed architectural studies, including vaulted interiors, carved stone ornament, sculptural reliefs and historic buildings. Circular views along the lower border present additional landmarks, while decorative patterns inspired by traditional Armenian architecture unite the entire composition. Grigor Avaguian, also known as Grigor Avagyan, was an Armenian cartographer and public figure whose works frequently explored the geography and cultural history of Armenia. Here, he transformed a scholarly architectural survey into an engaging visual document, emphasising the importance of preserving monuments that bear witness to centuries of Armenian history.
