This original 1968 poster was designed by Fida for the Parti Socialiste Unifié (PSU) during the political and social upheaval surrounding the events of May 1968 in France. The composition presents four successive groups of stylised figures accompanied by the slogans “Pouvoir ouvrier,” “Pouvoir paysan,” “Pouvoir étudiant” and, finally, “Pouvoir au peuple – PSU”: “Workers’ power, farmers’ power, students’ power, power to the people.” Printed in a restrained palette of black, grey and red, the repeated crowds visually unite the different forces that shaped the protest movement. Signed “Fida 68” in the plate, the poster was published as a supplement to issue no. 374 of Tribune Socialiste, dated 13 June 1968, and printed in Paris by Imprimerie Aussel. The PSU played an important role during May 1968, supporting the convergence of student protest, industrial action and demands for workers’ self-management. What makes this example particularly remarkable is its reverse. The other side bears an original Atelier Populaire poster entitled La participation, c’est pour mieux vous croquer, mes enfants!—“Participation: all the better to devour you, my children!” Inspired by the wolf from Little Red Riding Hood, this biting image ridiculed the Gaullist concept of “participation,” which protesters regarded as an attempt to contain or neutralise demands for genuine workers’ control. During May and June 1968, paper was scarce and posters were produced rapidly using whatever sheets were available. Existing political material was therefore sometimes reused and printed on the reverse. This exceptional double-sided survival brings together two distinct forms of revolutionary graphic expression: an official PSU campaign poster and the spontaneous, anonymous imagery created at the Atelier Populaire of the former École des Beaux-Arts. More than a political poster, this is a rare physical witness to the urgency, inventiveness and ideological debates of May 1968—two original historical designs preserved on a single sheet.
