Original Russian-language cinema poster dating from the 1920s and created to promote the silent film presented under the Cyrillic title “Жертва деспотизма,” translated into English as “Victim of Despotism.” Contemporary records concerning films examined for distribution in the Soviet Union place the title among French productions with colonial and exotic adventure themes. Foreign films formed an important part of Soviet cinema programmes during the New Economic Policy period, frequently receiving translated titles and specially designed promotional material for the local market. The composition is dominated by three dramatically presented figures. On the left, an older man wearing an elaborate turban is portrayed with a stern and authoritative expression. At the centre, a young veiled woman looks away pensively, while a formally dressed young man occupies the right side of the image. Their contrasting costumes and expressions suggest a narrative involving authority, tradition, romantic conflict and personal oppression. A distant landscape of trees and pale architecture establishes an exotic setting behind the characters. Muted shades of ochre, mauve, green and blue create an atmospheric, almost theatrical quality, while the monumental Cyrillic lettering commands the upper and lower sections of the poster. The diagonal placement of the word “Despotism” gives the otherwise static arrangement a strong sense of drama and tension. Unlike the geometric Constructivist designs commonly associated with later Soviet graphic art, this poster relies on expressive portraiture and melodramatic character types to capture the attention of cinema audiences. Its imagery reflects the fascination with distant cultures and heightened emotional narratives that characterised much international silent cinema advertising during the period. The poster provides no clearly identifiable cast, studio, printer or production credits, and its original French release title remains uncertain. It is therefore most accurately catalogued under its surviving Russian title and attributed to an anonymous poster artist. An unusual and historically evocative original cinema poster documenting the circulation and visual promotion of foreign silent films in the early Soviet period.
