This original circa 1970 lithograph by renowned French poster artist Michel Auriac encapsulates the playful sophistication of postwar graphic design with a flair for surreal scener y and vibrant color harmony. Known for his work in advertising and public commissions, Auriac brought a distinctive modernist touch to every composition, often blending stylized nature with abstract geometry. In this composition, a serene oriental-inspired landscape unfolds in vivid hues. A white arched bridge stretches across a gradient blue foreground, where golden bamboo leaves and red fruit or lanterns introduce both balance and rhythm. The middle ground is anchored by towering green foliage, while the background transitions into a mesmerizing sunset—a vertical spectrum of orange, indigo, violet, and midnight blue, layered against stylized rock formations and flame-like accents. The tiny figure of a child or traveler crossing the bridge, dwarfed by the towering elements around them, adds a touch of whimsy and narrative, inviting the viewer into an imaginary world both tranquil and otherworldly. Auriac’s ability to juxtapose minimalistic shapes with emotional depth is on full display here. This lithograph is a celebration of color, composition, and dreamlike atmosphere, perfectly capturing the era’s fascination with Eastern aesthetics, psychedelic palettes, and graphic experimentation. An exceptional piece for collectors of mid-century modern art, vintage French lithography, or those seeking a bold, meditative image with enduring visual impact.
