This magnificent turn-of-the-century lithographic poster by Henri Toussaint is a celebration of France’s historic western regions—Normandy, Brittany, and the Île de Jersey—promoted by the Chemins de fer de l'État, the State Railway system, as part of a campaign to encourage regional travel through reduced-fare excursions. At the center of the composition rises the Bayeux Cathedral, rendered in exquisite architectural detail with its towering Gothic spires and ornate stonework. The cathedral, a jewel of Norman heritage, is animated by a bustling market scene at its base—figures in period costume, umbrellas, carts, and florists fill the square with a sense of local color and vivacity. Toussaint, a noted painter and illustrator of historical subjects, evokes both the majesty and the daily life of the region in a delicate, painterly style. Surrounding the central image is a full border adapted from the famed Bayeux Tapestry, a masterful integration that turns this travel poster into a historical document in its own right. The tapestry—commissioned in the 11th century by Queen Matilda—narrates the Norman conquest of England, and here it underscores the region’s deep cultural resonance and medieval legacy. The decorative text at the bottom offers enticing “Voyages à Prix Réduits”—reduced-fare journeys—to these storied provinces, conjuring visions of romantic rail travel through landscapes steeped in legend, coastline, and Celtic charm. Printed by Champenois, one of Paris’s most prestigious lithographic houses, the poster is a fine example of the Belle Époque’s golden age of illustrated travel advertising. It marries historical reverence with promotional flair—an artifact of early tourism that treated travel not only as transport but as cultural pilgrimage. A prized piece for collectors of railway posters, Norman history, or French heritage art, this work bridges the worlds of graphic design, historical narrative, and architectural illustration.
