The legend of the Apache tears stem from the legend of the Apache tribe. In the 1800s, Apache men were cornered on top a mountain by US Cavalry in what is now called Superior, Ariz ona. In order to prevent capture and subsequent death, the Apache men along with their horses rode off the cliff. The Apache women and children cried so much their tears turned to stone. It is said that wearing or holding the stone will protect you from grief and sorrow. Apache tears are said to trigger emotional healing. They are great tools for meditation, or during times when the mind needs calming. It is said to be a remedy for shock, sudden loss and bereavement. Apache tears consist of spherules within perlite, which exhibits concentric, onion-skin fractures. Formation occurs when rhyolitic lava cools with increased alkalis and water, partially hydrating and converting obsidian to perlite.
