Betta api api is a small, colorful wild betta species belonging to the Betta coccina complex, native to peat swamps and blackwater streams in Sumatra, Indonesia. Males are strikingly bright red with metallic blue eyes and often display white or pale fin edges when in breeding condition. They reach a maximum size of 3–4 cm (1.2–1.5 inches). These fish thrive in soft, acidic, tannin-stained water (pH 5.0–6.5, temperature 24–28°C) with low flow, leaf litter, driftwood, and floating plants. They are carnivorous, preferring live or frozen foods like baby brine shrimp and daphnia. Betta api api are bubble-nesters, with males building nests and guarding fry. While generally peaceful, males can be territorial during breeding. They are considered rare and potentially endangered in the wild, though captive-bred specimens are available.
