Science & Origin of Apophyllite Apophyllite is a hydrated potassium calcium silicate mineral that crystallizes in the form of pyramidal structures, cubic crystals, as well as druzy on a matrix or other minerals. This mineral was first discovered in 1806 by R.J. Hauy, and was named after the Greek word meaning “leaf”. This name was chosen because of its unique tendency to crumble when heated. The common color of Apophyllite is clear or white, although it can also be found as grey, yellow, red, and green. Green Apophyllite is the rarest color of them all and was found a few decades ago by an Indian farmer in Poona, India. Since then, Green Apophyllite can also be found in Brazil and Quebec, Canada. Notable localities for the common white or translucent forms of Apophyllite include India, Australia, Russia, Germany, Greenland, Italy, and the USA. In 1978, the International Mineralogical Association classified Apophyllite as a group of minerals with a similar chemical makeup, instead of just a single stone. This would go on to include some minerals such as fluorapophyllite and hydroxy apophyllite. This change is still a heavily debated topic amongst mineralogists. In 2008, a change was made to drop the prefix of this group of minerals, thus resulting in all stones in this family bearing only the name Apophyllite. The change was short-lived, and 5 years later in 2013, the change was made once more to reinclude the prefix of each mineral in the group.
