Apothic Rosé Blend is a California rosé wine blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, bottled at 12.5% ABV in a standard 750ml format. The 2018 vintage earned a Gold Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and an 86-point score from Wine Enthusiast, which praised its "enticing and complex mint, thyme and raspberry aromas."Quick Facts: ABV: 12.5% | Origin: California, USA | Style: Rosé Blend | Producer: E. & J. Gallo WineryProduction & HeritageE. & J. Gallo Winery, founded in 1933 in Modesto, California, is one of the largest family-owned wine producers in the world. The Apothic brand draws its name from the "apotheca" — ancient wine cellars where rare blends were stored — and has become known for unconventional red and white blends since its launch. Apothic Rosé takes a Provence-inspired approach to California fruit, blending Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel grapes to achieve a style that balances the ripeness of warm-climate varietals with the crisp, refreshing character associated with southern French rosé winemaking.Tasting NotesAroma: Fresh strawberry and raspberry lead immediately, joined by lighter herbal notes of mint and thyme. A subtle undercurrent of watermelon rind adds a summery, lifted quality.Taste: The entry is bright with ripe strawberry and sour cherry, carrying a pleasant sweetness that stays controlled. Mid-palate introduces pear and delicate herbal tones, giving the wine unexpected complexity for its weight. The balance between sweet and tart keeps each sip engaging without tipping toward cloying territory.Finish: Medium in length with a smooth, lightly creamy texture that resolves into crisp acidity. Lingering red fruit and a faint herbaceous note close things out cleanly. How to Drink Apothic RoséServe chilled to around 45–50°F for the best expression of its fruit and acidity. This rosé drinks well on its own as an aperitif or poolside pour. It also works in several wine-based cocktails: a Frosé, where the strawberry-forward profile freezes into a natural slushy base; a Rosé Spritz with elderflower liqueur and sparkling water, amplifying the floral-herbal character; and a Sangria Rosada with fresh stone fruit and citrus, where the wine's natural sweetness reduces the need for added sugar.Best For Warm-weather gatherings like backyard barbecues or picnics Introducing rosé to red wine drinkers who enjoy fruit-forward styles Bridal showers, garden parties, and casual celebrations Weeknight pairing with lighter meals when you want something easy and refreshing Frequently Asked QuestionsWhat does Apothic Rosé taste like? Apothic Rosé delivers vibrant strawberry and raspberry flavors balanced by sour cherry and subtle herbal notes, finishing smooth and crisp with light creaminess. How does Apothic Rosé compare to Sutter Home White Zinfandel? Both are popular California pink wines at accessible price points, but Apothic Rosé is a drier, more structured blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel, while Sutter Home White Zinfandel leans noticeably sweeter with a simpler fruit profile. Apothic Rosé positions itself closer to a Provence-inspired style, whereas Sutter Home stays firmly in the sweet blush category. Is Apothic Rosé good for beginners? Yes — its approachable fruit sweetness, low tannin, and moderate 12.5% ABV make it an easy entry point for anyone exploring rosé wines or transitioning from sweeter white wines.Where is Apothic Rosé made? Apothic Rosé is produced by E. & J. Gallo Winery in California, sourcing Cabernet Sauvignon and Zinfandel grapes from the state's diverse growing regions. What foods pair well with Apothic Rosé? Grilled shrimp or salmon benefit from the wine's acidity cutting through richness. Strawberry and goat cheese salads echo the berry notes naturally. Charcuterie boards with mild cured meats complement the herbal undertones. Light pasta dishes with cream or pesto sauces match the wine's smooth texture. Fresh sushi rolls, particularly with tuna or salmon, align well with its crisp finish. What sizes does Apothic Rosé come in? Apothic Rosé is widely available in the standard 750ml bottle as well as 375ml half-bottles for smaller occasions. Is Apothic Rosé worth the price? Apothic Rosé positions itself as a value-tier California rosé that punches above its weight, evidenced by its Gold Medal at the San Francisco International Wine Competition and an 86-point Wine Enthusiast score — strong credentials at this price bracket. Why Apothic Rosé?What separates this wine from the crowded California rosé field is its Cabernet Sauvignon–Zinfandel blend, a combination rarely seen in domestic rosé and one that gives it more structural backbone than typical single-varietal options. The Provence-inspired winemaking philosophy keeps the wine from becoming overly sweet — a common pitfall in warm-climate rosé production. A Gold Medal from the San Francisco International Wine Competition validates the approach, and the Wine Enthusiast 86-point rating confirms there is genuine complexity here for a wine at this accessibility level. For anyone looking for a rosé that bridges the gap between sweet blush wines and bone-dry European styles, this blend lands squarely in that appealing middle ground.
