A great apple for late summer production, especially for fresh eating, Empire has McIntosh in its family tree. Like its parent it has pure white flesh which is both juicy and richl y flavourful. The Empire apple is a softer apple but it retains some texture, and when picked on time will not be mealy. The fruit polishes up to a lovely sheen and the fruit typically has a base of green overlaid with a rich burgundy red tone. Empire Apples are best eaten fresh from the tree, and will store for 3-4 weeks in the refrigerator. We also recommend them for applesauce or as an addition to ciders. In baking they retain their form without becoming mushy. The Empire apple is a very good variety for growing as an espallier or cordons since they develop fruiting spurs easily and tend to bear reliably and heavily every year. Show more
