One of the tallest garden mints, apple mint reaches heights the other mints may not reach. Soft gray-green round leaves are downy with a pronounced scent. It's fuzzy leaves and stems have a distinct minty apple taste, and it lends its flavor to teas, jams, drinks, etc. Additionally, it is said that it will calm upset stomach and soothe body and soul. Like most mints, apple mint can threaten the garden with too much of a good thing by taking over so be careful! Care Mint is a hardy, fast-spreading perennial that thrives in partial shade and moist, rich, well-draining soil. To keep mint plentiful and healthy, it should be watered fairly regularly allowing for about an inch of soil to dry out between each watering. It should be planted in rich soil that drains well and fertilized organically in the spring before it gets too hot. Growth Habit If you've not grown mint before, you'll learn that it can take over. If you are not interested in it taking over your garden, you may want to consider planting it in a pot that is at least 10" in diameter. This confines the roots and prevents them from spreading all over your bed. Best grown in zones 3-11. Toxicity While it may cause mild digestive upset if consumed in large quantities, it is not poisonous to pets. Keep ingestion minimal, avoid essential oils, and consult a vet if symptoms occur. Considered deer resistant.
