This set of 6 cards features the word, Appreciation, written from the heart. Appreciate someone by letting them know they made a difference in your life. Artist statement I wrote t he word, Appreciation, while reflecting on the past and felt a deep well of appreciation for the people who made my life fuller and better. Some, I will never get to thank because the moment is long gone or they are simply no longer in my life. Writing this word led me to re-awaken those good memories and helped me release the feeling of appreciation. About this card I speak often about the movement and rhythm of calligraphy, and when I am fully in the moment, my final work resonates with me. I can feel it with a piece isn't finished or is missing something. There is something very honest, emotional, and real that can be captured in calligraphy. Our senses can detect sincerity, beauty, and harmony with just a passing glance and we can feel uplifted or inspired looking at art. Appreciation, the word itself, has many letters and some that are descending letters that sink below the average lower case letter. How I feel affects the overall rhythm of the word. In this case, my breathing was slower and so was the pacing of my letters. I treated each letter with care, beginning with the first letter that sets the tone of the word, and the rest of the letters to just flowed, balancing the entire length of the word against the heaviness of the first letter. Calligraphy is both an artistic expression of the meaning of a word and the aesthetic design the letters. It is less about being rigid and uniform, but about being in the moment and releasing an honest feeling.
