APR Intercooler System - VW & Audi MQB/MQB EVO 1.8T/2.0T
The APR IC100019 Intercooler System is an OEM-location air-to-air intercooler upgrade for supported Volkswagen and Audi MQB and MQB Evo 1.8T and 2.0T vehicles. Its larger bar-and-p late core is designed to reduce intake-air temperatures, resist heat soak, and help the engine maintain more consistent performance during repeated acceleration, hot-weather driving, track use, and higher-output builds. This is not simply a larger core placed behind the bumper. APR engineered the core, internal fin arrangement, cast-aluminum end tanks, and factory-location airflow path together to balance cooling effectiveness, airflow distribution, and pressure drop. It installs without trimming, drilling, cutting, or permanently modifying the vehicle and does not require modification of the Adaptive Cruise Control system. Why Upgrade the Factory Intercooler? Reduces intake-air temperatures compared with the factory intercooler Helps minimize heat soak during consecutive pulls and sustained high-load driving Supports more consistent power as underhood and ambient temperatures increase Provides additional cooling capacity for stock, tuned, and upgraded-turbo vehicles Uses a low-pressure-drop core design to balance cooling and airflow Fits in the factory intercooler location and utilizes the factory air dams Requires no trimming, drilling, cutting, or permanent vehicle modification Retains compatibility with vehicles equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control Large Bar-and-Plate Intercooler Core The APR intercooler uses a densely packed bar-and-plate core with staggered and louvered fins. APR selected the core dimensions and fin density to increase cooling capacity while maintaining airflow to the radiator and other components positioned behind the intercooler. The APR core measures 24 inches wide, 16.25 inches tall, and 2.25 inches thick, providing a total external core volume of 877.5 cubic inches. Based on APR’s published measurements, this represents approximately: 92% more core volume than the factory MK7 Golf/Tiguan intercooler 78% more core volume than the factory MK7 GTI intercooler 62% more core volume than the factory MK7 Golf R intercooler Cast-Aluminum End Tanks Smooth cast 356-F aluminum end tanks distribute airflow across the entire intercooler core rather than concentrating it in one area. The one-piece end tanks incorporate machined mounting surfaces and hose connections before being TIG-welded to the core. APR pressure-tests the completed system to help identify leaks that could reduce boost pressure or performance. The hose connections also use slip-resistant mounting surfaces to help keep the intercooler hoses securely positioned. APR Heat-Soak and Performance Testing APR tested IC100019 using consecutive 12-second dyno pulls separated by only five seconds. These demanding tests were conducted on APR Stage 2 MK7 GTI and Golf R vehicles to compare the upgraded intercooler against the corresponding factory systems. Intercooler effectiveness: APR measured approximately 82–83% effectiveness, compared with 60% for the factory GTI intercooler and 65% for the factory Golf R intercooler. MK7 GTI test: By the end of the sixth pull, APR recorded an intake-air temperature of 49°C with its intercooler, compared with 84°C using the factory GTI intercooler and 82°C using the factory Golf R intercooler. MK7 GTI power result: Under those test conditions, APR recorded a final gain of 21 WHP over the factory GTI intercooler and 18 WHP over the factory Golf R intercooler. MK7 Golf R test: By the end of the sixth pull, APR recorded 36°C with its intercooler compared with 54°C using the factory Golf R intercooler. MK7 Golf R power result: APR recorded a final gain of 14 WHP under those test conditions. These figures are APR’s results from specific test vehicles and controlled testing conditions. Actual temperatures and performance will vary with the vehicle, software, turbocharger, fuel, ambient conditions, airflow, dyno, and other modifications. No. An upgraded intercooler can help a stock vehicle maintain more consistent intake-air temperatures, particularly in hot weather or during repeated acceleration. The cooling demands and potential benefit generally increase as engine output and sustained load increase. Does IC100019 fit both MQB and MQB Evo vehicles? APR lists IC100019 for supported MQB and MQB Evo 1.8T and 2.0T applications. Confirm your exact vehicle using the fitment information on this page before ordering. Can I use the factory intercooler hoses? Yes. APR states that IC100019 works with the factory intercooler hoses as well as the appropriate APR upgraded hose set. Does installation require cutting or trimming? No. APR designed IC100019 to install in the factory intercooler location without cutting, trimming, drilling, or permanently modifying the vehicle. Will it interfere with Adaptive Cruise Control? No. APR states that the intercooler is compatible with the factory Adaptive Cruise Control system and requires no ACC modification. Will this intercooler automatically add 21 horsepower? No specific power gain is guaranteed. APR measured gains of up to 21 WHP during its repeated-pull testing, but actual results depend on the vehicle, tuning, fuel, turbocharger, environmental conditions, and testing method. The principal benefit is improved temperature control and more consistent performance under heat.
