Archie is a handsome German Shepherd who is just 1 year and 10 months old. Sadly, he hasn't had the best start in life. After experiencing neglect and a lack of care, Archie came into the RSPCA underweight and in poor condition. While he is now safe, shelter life is proving difficult for him, and he is more than ready to begin the next chapter of his life with a family who will love him, invest in him, and finally give him the life he deserves.When Archie first arrived at the shelter, he was extremely thin and clearly hungry. As a result, he is now highly food motivated and can become overly enthusiastic around food. While Archie still needs to develop better manners and impulse control, this also makes him incredibly rewarding to train, he will do just about anything for a treat and genuinely enjoys engaging with his people, making him an eager and responsive training partner.Archie enjoys meeting new people, especially if snacks are involved! However, he can become overwhelmed by excessive handling from people he doesn't know. When he's feeling uncomfortable, he may jump up or mouth. Archie prefers to take introductions at his own pace, getting to know new people by simply spending time with them before receiving lots of pats and physical affection. Archie will need a home where everyone is over the age of 12 years old, who will read his body language and stress signals, and advocate for his need for space with others when required.Archie would thrive with further training to help him refine his manners, build his confidence, and improve his impulse control; he would highly benefit from working with a professional trainer that can help Archie’s new humans to get the best out of him. Food motivated and a quick learner, this boy will excel with someone who is willing to put in the time and effort; his high level of engagement and focus are what most people dog enthusiasts dream of.Archie will need an active home with someone who is committed to meeting his physical and mental stimulation needs. He is an intelligent dog who enjoys using his brain and will flourish with enrichment, structured training, and purposeful activities. Having already spent much of his life isolated in a backyard, bored and under-stimulated, Archie deserves a family who understands the needs of the German Shepherd breed and is committed to making him part of their everyday life, not simply leaving him as a backyard dog.Archie is conflicted with other dogs; he is worried and unsure how to behave when they are nearby. Archie’s first instinct is to bark and voice how unsure he is, however when given time to calm down and engage with his handler, he has shown progress in tolerating other dogs nearby and staying calm. Archie needs someone that will work on his interactions with others overtime, for now, he needs to be the only dog in his new home.Archie has not been tested with cats or other small animals.Despite his difficult start, Archie has so much potential. With the right guidance, patience, and commitment, we have no doubt he will blossom into an incredibly loyal, intelligent, and devoted companion.
