Pass me the butter?” Carmen laughed at her friend’s remark, and tossed a stick of butter over the island, which Desi caught neatly, one-handed. Baking was a passion Carmen and Desi had shared since their sleep deprived college days, a way to alleviate the stresses of Calculus, Biochemistry, and messy romantic relationships. They could chat for hours waiting for dough to rise and pastry to chill, their many roommates slowly gathering in the kitchen to surround them is a warm circle of friendship, attracted by the delicious smells emanating from the oven. They were years removed from their student days now, but baking together always came back around, as patterns in life are wont to do. Desi went on, “He’s so tall, that’s why I thought he was our age, what am I supposed to do with a 26 year old?” “Des, height does not equal age. We’re people, not trees. And 26 isn’t that much younger. Besides, younger men often have more… stamina.” Desi giggled and pressed the pastry into the pie pan, gently tracing the circular edge as she thought. “He sets me on fire, Cara, the things he says, nothing overt, but I swear he’s flirting. We haven’t even kissed, but he wiped a crumb off my forearm the other day as we were going over spreadsheets and I almost burst into flames. I had to pretend to need the bathroom to escape and collect myself. We do this walk around the park on our lunch break, and now every time I smell cedarwood I look around for him. Did I mention that he smells incredible? All smoky and woodsy.” Carmen looked at her friend, who had been pressing pastry into the pie pan for the past 20 minutes. “It’s ok to take a chance on someone you know. Archi seems kind, and hot, and smart enough to keep up with you, my platonic mathematical soulmate. Give him a shot.” There was a shout and a gentle cacophony of laughter and jackets being removed from the entryway, suggesting the rest of the crew had arrived. How lucky Desi felt all of a sudden to be encircled by good friends, rallied to her home by love and the siren call of home baking. It made taking chances feel possible. “You made it!” She called out to the new arrivals. “Who wants some pie?” Scent Notes: Sweet amber, sandalwood and smoke, rosewood, galbanum, finishing zing of gunpowder and black pepper.
