This Archimedes Screw is handmade by Artisan Fred Cobbs and is made of wood and soldered metal and copper. Handle does turn. Piece is signed and dated by Artisan. The Archimedes sc rew is an ancient hydraulic machine, often credited to the Greek inventor Archimedes, used to lift water from a low level to a higher one. It consists of a hollow cylinder or U-shaped trough surrounding a helical (spiral) blade. As the screw rotates, it scoops up water and moves it upward along the spiral, commonly powered by hand, animals, or motors.
