A fail-safe supply network is designed to mitigate the impact of variations and disruptions on people and corporations. It is achieved by developing a network structure to mitigate the impact of disruptions and planning flow through the network to neutralize the effects of variations. This is achieved by architecting fail-safe supply networks, which are characterized by reliability, robustness, flexibility, structural controllability, and resilience. Organizations can use the framework to manage variations and disruptions, selecting the best operational management strategies and network restoration strategies. Format: Paperback / softback Length: 358 pages Publication date: 31 March 2021 Publisher: Taylor & Francis Ltd A fail-safe supply network is a meticulously crafted system designed to minimize the adverse effects of fluctuations and disruptions on individuals and organizations. Its primary objective is achieved through two interconnected strategies: (1) the establishment of a robust network structure that can withstand disruptions that distort the existing structure, and (2) the strategic planning of flow within the network to neutralize the impacts of variations. In this comprehensive monograph, we present a comprehensive framework for designing fail-safe supply networks. We develop mathematical models to support our proposals and provide illustrative examples to demonstrate their practical application. Our research reveals a fundamental insight: disruption management decisions made at the strategic network design level are intricately intertwined with variation management decisions made at the operational level. Consequently, we advocate for a holistic approach to managing disruptions and variations in supply networks. To achieve this, we propose the development of fail-safe supply networks characterized by several key attributes: reliability, robustness, flexibility, structural controllability, and resilience. These attributes form the foundation of a resilient and adaptable supply chain that can withstand the challenges posed by fluctuations and disruptions.Organizations can leverage the framework presented in this monograph to effectively manage variations and disruptions in their supply networks. Managers can employ a range of operational management strategies, considering factors such as supply and demand variations, to optimize their supply chain operations. Additionally, they can identify the most suitable network restoration strategies, including facility fortification, backup inventory, flexible production capacity, flexible inventory, and transportation route reconfiguration. The framework we propose is highly versatile and can be applied to other complex engineered networks beyond supply chains. Its principles and methodologies are grounded in established theories and practices, ensuring its validity and reliability in diverse contexts. In conclusion, a fail-safe supply network is a critical component of modern business operations. By implementing the strategies outlined in this monograph, organizations can enhance their resilience, adaptability, and competitiveness in an ever-evolving global marketplace. The time has come for businesses to embrace the power of fail-safe supply network design and build a foundation for long-term success.
