Arctic Twilight is the final release of the Arctic Series of Apricots. It was created from a cross between the Westcot Apricot which was bred in the prairies, and the Harglow Apricot from Ontario. The Arctic Twilight blooms come in several days later than Westcot's. Its flavour is quite sweet and reminiscent of its Ontario roots. The freestone fruit sizes up to 4-5 cm (1 3/4") and ripens by the middle of August. The Arctic Twilight was developed in a fruit breeding program created by Dean Kreutzer and Tyler Kaban in Lumsden, Saskatchewan. Growers Note: Apricots' main pitfall on the prairies is that they flower early and may get hit by a late frost. The tree may be hardy but not their flowers! On average we are only rewarded with apricots every 4 years or so depending on the weather. Try planting your apricot tree where the trunk won't see much spring sun. You don't need to completely shade the tree around the base. The idea is to keep the ground cool and prevent warming. Piling up some snow and adding leaves around the base will also help. This may give you up to an extra week or two before it flowers.
