Waterhouse, an English painter, was celebrated for his embrace of the Pre-Raphaelite style and his depictions of ancient Greek mythology. In the legend, Adonis, the Greek god of beauty, desire, and rebirth, meets a tragic fate while hunting. Rushing to his aid, Aphrodite (Venus in Roman mythology) accidentally pricks herself on a thorn, turning her once pure white rose into a vivid crimson, stained by her blood. A kiss from the goddess revives Adonis, symbolizing the eternal cycle of life.
