Hera’s watchman, Argus was the giant of one hundred eyes charged with guarding the nymph Io, disguised by Zeus as a heifer to hide her from his wife. It was said that he had so man y eyes that he never fully slept; always with a few eyes open to keep watch. When he was slain by Hermes, the first bloodshed of the new gods, his many eyes were preserved forever by Hera in the tail of a peacock to commemorate his watch.
