Roll most pillbugs into a ball and you get a smooth pebble. Roll this one up and the sphere is still covered in spines. That is the party trick of Armadillidium beieri, better known as Beier's Pill Woodlouse, a spiny Greek Mediterranean pillbug that wears its armour on the outside. A run of small tubercles, part bump and part short spine, tracks from the front of the head all the way back along the body, giving it a texture almost unheard of among the mostly smooth-domed Armadillidium. Up close that spiny run is the whole appeal. Where a typical pill woodlouse presents a clean, rounded shell, A. beieri looks studded and armoured, the ridged tubercles catching the light and lending a rough, almost crystalline finish. A subtle yellowish wash sits under the texture, warmer than the grey of most garden species without tipping into loud pattern. Because it conglobates like every Armadillidium, rolling into a tight defensive ball when disturbed, the spines stay on show even then: the balled animal reads as a spiny sphere rather than a smooth marble. If you already keep the bumpy Armadillo tuberculatus or the pebbled, granulated Armadillidium granulatum, this sits alongside them as one of the more sculpted rollers in the hobby. Greece holds an extraordinary run of endemic Armadillidium, and Beier's Pill Woodlouse is one of the more striking of them. It earns its place as a display animal on texture alone, offering something different from the bold stripes of Zebra isopods or the mixed colours of Jelly Bean isopods. Set against dark leaf litter and cork, the spiky, faintly golden bodies stand out in a way smooth species rarely manage. Care follows the Mediterranean pattern rather than the tropical one, which keeps it well within reach for newer keepers. It wants roughly 18 to 24°C, and room temperature in most UK homes sits inside that band. Aim for moderate humidity with a clear gradient: keep one end damp and let the rest run drier, so the colony can choose its comfort zone rather than sitting in uniform wet. Give it medium to high ventilation to keep the air fresh, and keep calcium available at all times, since the tuberculate shell leans on it for clean moults. A deep bed of leaf litter with cork bark for cover does most of the work, and a handful of flake soil worked through the substrate adds food and structure. A springtail culture makes a tidy cleanup partner, grazing mould before it takes hold around damper patches and softer foods. Breeding asks for a little patience up front. A fresh group takes its time to settle before it starts producing young, so the first few weeks can look quiet without anything being wrong. Once the colony finds its feet, though, it turns prolific, and steady numbers follow with very little intervention. That slow-then-generous rhythm makes it one of the more forgiving Greek species to grow out, and a sound choice if you want an unusual pillbug without demanding husbandry.
