We came across these antique tobacco silks at a brocante in Aix-en-Provence. These are small printed pieces of silk or satin that were included as a collectible premium in cigarett e or tobacco packaging, mainly during the late 1800s to the early 1900s (especially 1900–1920s). Also called "cigarette silks," "tobacco silks," or “silkies", they featured a wide range of printed images — national flags, flowers, animals, famous people, university pennants, military insignia, etc. Many were actually sewn into quilts, pillows, or banners by collectors, making them both advertising ephemera and folk art.
