Entangled in a fever of cultural hegemony and censorship, artists at the time of this issue's release endured repression. The issue opens with Complexities of Art in Cuba by Tami Katz-Freiman. Despite the radical transformations that have taken place in the past years, Cuban artists still fought censorship; Katz-Freiman’s perspective is that the majority of Cuban artists respond to political oppression in their work. Jose Torres Tama explores similar difficulties in depth in Voices from the Underground, which explores how performance art has been in the middle of a war, extending the territory of art and censorship, which actually threatens a democratic belief system built on freedom of speech, and how artists are known to continue making regardless of a antagonistic political climate. The issue also includes an interview by Gean Moreno with Liza Lou, a sculpture artists, whose work mimics the idealism of the suburbs and the hollowness at its center.
