Use Shellac Flakes to make fresh shellac – simply dissolve in methylated spirits. Shellac has a variety of uses. It may be used as a tough, natural primer, sanding sealer, tannin-blocker, odour blocker and high-gloss varnish. It is also an effective way to form a barrier on wood to prevent the bleeding of pigments into the final finish, or to prevent uneven finishes when wood staining.Can also be used as a protective coating for paintings, however may yellow or crack over time.To use, dissolve flakes in methylated spirits and use a strainer to remove any debris. Mix in a plastic or glass container with a tightly fitting lid and store in a cool and dark place. Shake or stir your shellac mix and leave to stand for a few hours before use. The advantage of mixing your own shellac is that the variable of time is removed. The older the shellac mixture, the longer it will take to dry. By mixing only what you need to use for every painting, you are ensure a faster-drying shellac.
