Artfelt® Paper is a blank canvas for you to paint your masterpiece on using wool and a few tacks from a felting needle. You can cut the paper into any shape you desire to create a felted piece of fabric. Squares, triangles, semi-circles, waves, and hearts. Don't stop at two dimensions, Artfelt® Paper can be wrapped around pieces of styrofoam to create 3D structures of felt. What is it? Although Artfelt® Paper looks just like some other interfacings that dissolve in water, Artfelt® Paper is quite different. This paper (which is not a fabric, as it is not woven) was specifically designed for this method of felting and is the only “dissolving” product available that dissolves ONLY with boiling water, not simply water. This is a very important distinction, as your piece needs to be wet to felt. Artfelt® Paper allows you to felt extremely simple to incredibly complex pieces with minimal space and little physical effort. You can create a felted material that can be thick or thin, precise or abstract, and the whole process can be accomplished with very little experience and in a minimal amount of time. How the Artfelt® process works Using the Artfelt® method of felting, your clothes dryer is the source of agitation for wet fibers. The Artfelt® paper is used as a base for your felted piece and holds the fibers in position while the actual felting process takes place in the dryer. In the end, when your piece is completely felted, the Artfelt® paper is dissolved and you are left with an original piece of felted material. Since the Artfelt® method requires the unique paper to create felt, the method is best used for creating flat pieces of felt – such as scarves, table runners, wall hangings, and fabric for cut and sew projects. In more advanced instruction manuals, you will learn how to use the paper to create multi-dimensional items. One thing the Artfelt® method does not lend itself to is three-dimensional animals and figurines. For this, you will want to use the needle felting technique. The whole Artfelt® process is quite simple and can be broken into four easy steps: Position the wool fibers and tack them into the Artfelt®Paper. Prepare your piece for the felting process by getting it wet and rolling it up with plastic sheeting. Felt your piece in the dryer. Dissolve the paper. There is no 'wrong side' to the Artfelt® paper. The paper can be cut and sewn together with a sewing machine to create three-dimensional canvases.
