This white paper has 42 pages. Several approaches to scheduling projects have been proposed as alternatives to the Critical Path Method: Critical Chain and Agile. Neither one of these new approaches will replace the Critical Path Method in all industries it is used in today. Therefore, this White Paper raises the question: In which way should we improve the Critical Path theory to make it stand the test of our times? The authors decided that the next edition of the Critical Path Method, Critical Path 2.0, should be able to handle the following situations: 1. Logical constraints: relationships between activities mandated by an organization2. Resource constraints (non-financial, non-space): limited availability of resources on projects3. Date constraints4. Calendar constraintsThe White Paper formulates the new definition for Critical Path 2.0: Critical Path 2.0 is the subset of activities that determines the entire duration of the project and the finish date of the schedule when all schedule data entered into the scheduling application is taken into account. There can be multiple Critical Paths that run in parallel in one schedule. The White Paper also discusses two ways to identify the new Critical Path 2.0 in schedules (The Most-Critical Path approach and The Longest Path approach) and explains them. The Most-Critical Path approach is presented as the most viable of these approaches by the authors.
