This drawing depicts the last retail business to be demolished in St. Louis’s lost Chinatown, once known as Hop Alley. Chinese Americans first arrived in St. Louis in the 1850s and , due to racially discriminatory laws, were forced to live in the area called Hop Alley. Over time, it grew into a vibrant community with parks, grocery stores, restaurants, and other essential businesses serving its residents. In 1955, the neighborhood was demolished to make way for Busch Stadium, which opened in 1966. Show more
