Asphodelus macrocarpus seeds grow into the large-fruited asphodel — a tuberous geophyte native to the subtropical biome from south-central Europe to the western and central Mediterranean — from France, Italy, Sardinia, Corsica, Sicily, Spain and north-western Africa. Described by Filippo Parlatore (1816–1877), the Italian botanist and Director of the Natural History Museum of Florence who authored the multi-volume Flora Italiana. The epithet macrocarpus means 'large-fruited', referring to the conspicuously enlarged seed capsules compared to related species. Two subspecies: subsp. macrocarpus and subsp. rubescens. A robust asphodel producing tall, branched flower scapes with white flowers and prominently large capsules.
