Asplenium nidus spores grow into the bird's nest fern — an epiphytic or lithophytic fern native to the wet tropical biome from Malesia to northern and north-eastern Queensland, Australia, widely naturalised across tropical regions worldwide. One of the most recognisable ornamental ferns — produces large, simple, undivided, glossy bright-green fronds with a dark midrib, growing in a radial nest-like rosette from a central crown (the 'nest') that collects fallen leaves, debris and moisture from forest canopy above. Fronds can reach 50–150 cm long, occasionally to 200 cm, on large specimens. A premier houseplant and indoor tropical fern. Spore propagation as confirmed in patent literature takes approximately 8 months under greenhouse conditions: spores sown on sphagnum, prothalli emerge at 4–5 months, fertilization occurs, sporophytes root and can be pricked out.
