Founded in 1856 by the enterprising J.E. Todd, Meleng Tea Estate stands as a cornerstone in Assam’s storied tea legacy. Nestled along the banks of the Meleng River, near the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary in Upper Assam’s Jorhat district, the estate takes its name from the river that has nourished its lands for generations.Meleng is among Assam’s oldest tea gardens, renowned for cultivating both traditional Assamica and clonal varieties. Its historical prominence is marked by the development of the iconic P-126 clone, which originated here and continues to thrive across 20 hectares—making it a lasting contributor to Assam’s tea landscape.Spanning over 1,340 hectares—with 840 under active cultivation—Meleng blends its rich heritage with modern tea-making practices.
