In the wild, they are found in shallow reefs of the western Pacific, including areas around Japan and Taiwan, favoring dimly lit or shaded locations at depths of 1–6 meters. They are generally shy, but can become more confident in well-structured aquariums with ample hiding spots. In the aquarium, Randall’s Assessor Basslets thrive in tanks with plenty of live rock, caves, and crevices that mimic their natural habitat. They are carnivorous and require a diet of finely chopped fresh or frozen marine foods such as mysis shrimp, brine shrimp, fish, and squid, ideally fed multiple times daily. Considered reef-safe, Randall’s Assessor Basslets do not harm corals or invertebrates.
