About the Guppy Guppies (Poecilia reticulata) are a vibrant, popular freshwater fish species, known for their dazzling colors, flowing fins (especially in males), and ability to give birth to live offspring. They are a great choice for beginners and thrive in community tanks. Guppies and other livebearers tend to prefer harder water which can be accomplished through the addition of aquarium salt or a small portion of crushed coral.
