Duration: 2'20" Percussion Septet Asterius is written for dedicated to the James Madison Middle School Percussion Ensemble and their director Victoria Shockley-Newton. Victoria ask ed me to write a work for her students that was exciting, loud, and boisterous. The theme I came up with in response to that is the opening of the piece that uses tritones and half steps as a way of creating dissonance and the feeling of danger. The name of the piece comes from the minotaur from ancient greek myth who is slain by Theseus. I thought that this particular myth was a perfect tie in to the exciting and dangerous sounding theme of the beginning as well as a fun hint to James Madison Middle Schools mascot the Matador.
