Measures 24" x 49 x 1" Framed Medium: Butcher Paper, Original Artwork The Butcher Paper DrawingsExperimenting is my favorite part of being an artist. What began as traditional pen-and-ink drawings has evolved over time into three-dimensional paper dioramas, layered collages,and mixed media. My latest shift is a series of large-scale, irreverent character drawingsusing markers on leftover butcher paper.The material itself carries a personal history. When my kids were toddlers, they used tohave "drawing wars" on rolls of butcher paper, sprawled out on the floor for hours tellinglong, running stories. They eventually grew up and abandoned the rolls, leaving them to sit in our garage for years until I felt a playful urge to try something new.The paper has become a statement of its own. It is humble and easily crumpled, and itstendency to discolor over time is part of the charm. While my other works rely on starkwhite, 100 lb Bristol paper, drawing on butcher paper has helped loosen both my hand and my mind—urging me to embrace “happy accidents,” as Bob Ross used to say, and enjoy the pure spontaneity of creating.For this series, as in all my work, I create self-imposed rules. The rules for these drawingsare simple: find a reference photo of an ordinary person, caricaturize them, and remix thesubject with science fiction affectations—ray guns, space helmets, and cyborg parts. It’s a nostalgic nod to my kids’ drawing wars.These drawings are so distinct from my other work that they almost feel drawn by acompletely different hand. As this experiment continues, my plan is to lean into that division and establish a second artist identity dedicated entirely to this playful, pseudo sci-fi world.
