The Astronaut vase reads as a small human figure with an unhurried posture, and as a space themed vase it commits to the bit without turning the whole shelf into a diorama. A few years back the studio watched the whole neighborhood become briefly, intensely obsessed with a solar eclipse, buying certified glasses for the other three years and eleven months of their lives. In the middle of that a small figure joined a lineup of Chive pieces that already included a cat and a dog in orbit, and by then nobody was in a position to question the logic. This novelty ceramic vase has no name, no mission, no specific claim to fame — just a person, up there, the way we were all looking up that one afternoon. Every piece is shaped by hand at Chive Ceramics Studio, one glaze at a time, and everyone who used their eclipse glasses exactly once will understand it immediately.
