Astrophytum asterias, literally meaning “star-plant star-like,” grows naturally among the limestone soils and gravel of Starr County, Texas, and south into Nuevo León, Mexico. Habitat destruction from agriculture and development has greatly reduced wild populations of this iconic cactus, though thankfully it remains straightforward in cultivation. In habitat, A. asterias experiences intense seasonal thunderstorms during the warmer months, followed by periods of heat and drying conditions. We find this translates well to cultivation: a fast-draining mineral mix with some limestone content, bright filtered light, high temperatures, and thorough watering during active growth. We breed our plants from a wide gene pool, so each seedling develops its own character. Your A. asterias may differ somewhat from the reference photo in both bloom and phenotype.
