Usually eight broad ribs divide the green disc, with round woolly areoles arranged in neat lines from the centre to the outer edge.Seedlings begin small and nearly spherical, then broaden into the characteristic low star shape. The white pattern becomes denser and more varied as new tissue forms, ranging from fine stippling to larger connected patches. Mature plants commonly remain below 15 cm across.
