Ata Rangi is one of the founding names of New Zealand Pinot Noir. Pioneer Clive Paton planted the Martinborough Terrace in 1980, and under winemaker Helen Masters the estate has become a byword for elegance, energy and longevity. The 2024 opens with red cherry, strawberry, a twist of dried orange rind and fine peppercorn spice. Hand-tended fruit was fermented with roughly 35% whole bunches (the balance de-stemmed), hand-plunged through a peak ferment around 32°C. The palate is refined and silky — fine tannins, bright acidity and juicy fruit carried by a crisp, stony, lingering finish. A benchmark Martinborough Pinot built to age. Beautiful now with duck, venison or mushroom dishes, and will reward a decade in the cellar.
