Atheist is a death metal band hailing from Sarasota, Florida. Founded in 1984 by vocalist/guitarist Kelly Shaefer and drummer Steve Flynn, the band quickly made a name for themselv es with their intricate and technical musicianship, blending together elements of death metal, jazz, and progressive rock. Their 1991 debut album, Piece of Time, is widely considered a classic of the genre, showcasing the band's virtuosic playing and complex song structures.
