The concept that matter is made up of tiny indivisible particles, is ancient. The Greek philosopher Democritus theorized that all things were composed of small bits called "atoms," derived from the Greek word atomos meaning "indivisible." In the 19th century, chemist John Dalton introduced the atomic theory into chemistry. He discovered that chemical elements appeared to combine to each other by basic units of weight.
