Hemp shiv holds considerably more moisture than straw or wood-based products, and that single property drives most of the benefit — a drier floor means less ammonia, fewer respiratory problems and longer between full changes. Because it absorbs more, less bedding is needed to do the same job, which offsets the higher price per bale against wood shavings. It is a natural hemp product grown without pesticides, and once soiled it can go straight on the compost heap, where it breaks down into a good garden fertiliser rather than sitting for months as shavings do.
