Schönfeld is famous historic locality for large Augite crystals. Despite being a rock-forming mineral, individual freestanding Augite crystals are not very common. Within the famou s Eifel Volcanic Field, the Schönfelder Maar crater near Gerolstein, Vulkaneifel District, Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany is a famous historic locale for Augite crystals although very few are seen nowadays in private collections. This undoubtedly very old crystal, or twinned crystal is quite considerable in size, reaching almost 5 cm in length.
