Augustiner Edelstoff is a Munich-style helles lager brewed by Augustiner-Bräu, Munich's oldest independent brewery. At 5.6% ABV, Edelstoff is a fuller, slightly stronger take on the classic helles style, and it has long been regarded by beer drinkers in Munich as one of the benchmark examples of the style. Augustiner-Bräu's history dates back to 1328, when Augustinian monks first began brewing in a monastery close to Munich Cathedral. The brewery continued under monastic control for centuries before being privatised in 1817, and it has operated as an independent, family-influenced brewery since 1829. That long, continuous history is part of why Augustiner beers, including Edelstoff, are held in particularly high regard in Bavaria, where the brewery is known for still filling some of its beer into traditional wooden casks rather than relying solely on modern kegs. In the glass, Edelstoff pours a golden straw colour with bright clarity and a firm white foam head. The aroma is traditionally hop-forward for a helles, with floral, grassy and slightly earthy notes sitting over a base of crackery pale malt and a hint of hay. On the palate, grainy, lightly bready malt forms the core of the beer, balanced by mild floral and grassy hop character, with secondary notes of spice, lemon zest and a faint suggestion of apple. The finish is crisp, clean and dry, which is characteristic of well-made helles lagers and reflects the style's emphasis on drinkability over intensity. Edelstoff is well suited to the food pairings traditionally associated with Munich lagers: roast chicken, pork dishes, pretzels and mild to medium cheeses all work well alongside it, as does a simple pairing with white sausage and mustard in the Bavarian style. Served cold in a tall glass or stein, it also stands on its own as a refreshing beer for warmer weather, given its clean finish and moderate but noticeable strength for the style. For drinkers seeking an authentic, traditionally brewed Munich helles rather than a modern interpretation, Augustiner Edelstoff offers a direct link to a brewing history stretching back almost seven centuries. Its 5.6% ABV and full, rounded character make it a satisfying choice for those who already know the helles style, while its clean, approachable profile also makes it a sensible starting point for anyone new to German lager.
