A member of the quartz family, amethyst was prized by the ancient Greeks, Romans and Egyptians. While the Egyptians valued it purely for its aesthetic value, the Greeks and Romans believed it was capable of warding off intoxication, with the gem's deep purple color indicating the look and feel of ' red wine'. In fact, the word amethyst derives from the old Greek word ‘Amethystos’ which translates to ‘not intoxicated’. The gem transitioned during Middle Ages, as violet had become the prominent color of royalty, with several members of the English Regalia proudly displaying trinkets and baubles inlaid with amethyst.
