Autumn has always been my favourite season in Australia. Growing up in Queensland, summers were long and intense. Everything felt hot. Autumn was the relief when the heat finally broke and the temperature felt just right. My birthday falls in autumn, and the season has always felt like a reset. The pace slows, colours deepen, and there’s a sense of preparing for what comes next. It’s the time of year where I start to pull back, ready to hibernate into the cooler months. That’s what Australian Autumn feels like to me. The layered marks, muted tones and imperfect surface reflect that shift, from intensity to ease. It isn’t about a specific place, but about that familiar seasonal change Australians know well. This painting holds that feeling of pause and relief. Of things softening without stopping.
